Stunning poster of Thomas R. Kent who was born on 29th August 1865 in Cork.
Kent was an organiser for the Irish Volunteers and a land reform agitator.
In 1914, Kent and his three brothers organised a branch of the Irish Volunteers at Castlelyons, Cork. Kent was also involved in the Plan of Campaign, a movement for land reform, which led to him being imprisoned previous to 1916.
When the Kent brothers learned of the Rising they remained away from home hoping for mobilisation orders, but returned on the night of the 1st of May when none were received. The following morning, the RIC surrounded their home in their search for Irish Volunteers and IRB members.
Gunfighting ensued, during which Head Constable W.C. Rowe was shot dead. Thomas and William Kent were arrested; David and Richard Kent were wounded, with Richard succumbing to his injuries.
Kent was executed by firing squad in Cork on 9th May 1916 and was the only volunteer executed outside of Dublin following the Rising.
This poster has been recreated in the style of the original 1916 Leader's posters using a photograph of Kent from the Walton Collection. It is mounted on green suede and framed beautifully in a black mahogany frame with a gold sightline.
