County Kerry- Killarney - Approach to Killarney from the Kenmare Road c.1840

Another magnificent panoramic of the Approach to Killarney from the Kenmare Road (c.1840) from William H. Bartlett. Close to where was later to be called "Ladies View".

The name "Ladies View" stems from the admiration of the view given by Queen Victoria's ladies-in-waiting during Victoria's 1861 visit to Ireland. What is now one of the most photographed views in in Ireland, looking back towards Killarney, is captured as it was over 180 years ago, with travelling peasant mother and child, mother carrying her load balanced on her head and child with open hand outstretched, perhaps begging from the two sitting lady tourists, on a road in poor condition by today's standards. Bartlett aptly states: "From this elevation the three bodies of water appear spread out below the eye, with their islands and mountain shores, in a landscape of which no description can convey an adequate idea. Fortunately, in this case the pencil "takes up my burden," and in the wonderful perfection of the art, description can be conveyed through the eye almost with the reality and enjoyment of nature".

Please note the Pine Green mount board is not as quite dark as it appears in the frame image and the colour of the final print is closer to the detail sample from the picture inset below.
